Home Learning Tasks wb: 30.3.20
This half term, we have been learning about the Maya and their culture. We found out about their gods, their religion and their belief that they were formed out of corn. During 'Healthy Body and Mind' Week, Year 5 tried Mayan food, including corn wraps, avocado and beans. We have had a lot of additional opportunities with our local environment this half term, including a workshop about Sir Richard Burton and a visit to his mausoleum, a visit to a St Paul’s exhibition and a drumming workshop. There is a lot to look forward to next half term as well, with out topic about Space! The Pre-Learning Tasks can help prepare you for our next topic.
So far in Autumn 2, we have been studying 'The Victorians', we have looked at different aspects of Victorian life using 'Street Child' as a platform to explore what life was like in the workhouses and on the streets. Year 5 visited the Victorian School, to understand how schools have changed since the 1800's. They dressed up as Victorian children and practiced Victorian school rules and perfected their 'Copperplate' style handwriting to prepare them for their roles.
Pre-learning Tasks for Autumn 2
In Autumn 1, we have been reading 'The London Eye Mystery' by Siobhan O'Dowd. Year 5 have come up with theories as to what happened and have edited and slightly altered them as we read the book and new information became apparent. For our Guided Reading, we read 'The Better Brown Stories' , which allowed us to explore the role of the writer and how to take control of our narratives. We have used our local area, at Vine Road, to explore our Science focus of 'Life Cycles', encouraging Year 5 to learn from the environment around them.
