Computing
At St Osmund’s our computing curriculum provides children with the skills and knowledge to keep them safe and prepare them for a technology rich future. The computing curriculum at St Osmund’s is designed to progressively develop children’s knowledge of computer science, digital literacy and information technology, to enable them to confidently utilise technology. This teaching process is determined by the careful sequencing of knowledge, using Kapow Computing within our curriculum.
Today’s society leads to an increased importance in teaching children how to be safe online, this is something we are focusing on in order to prepare the children and meet their needs when it comes to using the internet. By the time, the children leave the school our aim is that all children will be resilient, confident and safety aware when it comes to something they believe is not right. Our curriculum teaches all children the skills they need to be successful and helps to prepare them for their future giving them confidence in different aspects of computing.
Design and Technology
Design and Technology is a practical subject which encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At St Osmund's, we aim to inspire our children to be creative and resourceful in their design and execution of products, using their creativity and imagination, to make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.Throughout the school, the children have the opportunities to discuss their likes and dislikes; look at real life inventors and how they have changed our world; continuously questioning and researching the effectiveness of their product.Having planned and made their products, pupils evaluate the appropriateness of their work to ensure that they appreciate their usefulness in real life contexts. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers, inspiring them to think analytically about the world in which they live. We aim to link subjects, wherever possible, and develop transferable skills from mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
Art
At St Osmund’s we believe that no two people see things in exactly the same way and therefore encourage children to draw, paint and create what they see and not what they think they are supposed to see. In this way children develop a positive and very individual approach to art and their creativity is allowed to flourish.
Art is taught as a discreet subject in line with the National Curriculum 2014 objectives and encourages the children to see art as fundamentally important to creation and their education. The children study specific artists; develop skills in sketching, paintwork and sculpture; and show progression of these skills within their sketchbooks.
Art is celebrated through an Art Week, during which the children use the skills that they have acquired over the course of the year, to produce work around a theme. The culmination of all children’s work during Art Week is exhibited in a local exhibition, which is very well supported by parents and the local area and is a key event in the annual calendar.
